Following the successful training phase, Africa Faith and Justice Network-Ghana (AFJN-Ghana), in collaboration with the CSIR–Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (SARI), has moved to the next stage of implementation with the establishment of a yam farm in Chirifoyili.
On Tuesday, 22 June 2026, a team from SARI, Nyankpala, led by Dr. Kwabena Darkwa, supported the planting of 5,120 improved yam setts on a quarter-acre piece of land earlier assessed and approved for cultivation.
This activity marks a significant step in translating the skills acquired during the training into practical action. The initiative continues to focus on empowering women and girls economically through sustainable agricultural practices, while contributing to improved household livelihoods.
Beyond economic benefits, the project also seeks to support the retention of girls in school through completion. By strengthening the financial capacity of families, it aims to reduce the vulnerability of girls to early marriage and domestic servitude.

The planting exercise was characterized by enthusiasm and active participation from the women, who demonstrated strong commitment by engaging fully in activities such as ridge moulding and planting. Their involvement highlighted a growing sense of ownership of the project.
Hon. Achire, the focal person for the initiative, was present to support and encourage the women. In a show of community solidarity, some men also joined the activity after being inspired by the dedication displayed by the women.
Speaking during the exercise, AFJN Field Coordinator, Simon Dumba, reiterated the objectives of the project and encouraged the women to remain committed to proper farm management. He also highlighted the link between the project and the Girls’ Club—part of the community’s football team—and encouraged the girls to participate in farm activities during school holidays.
Dr. Kwabena Darkwa advised the women on proper farm maintenance practices and assured them of continuous technical support. He indicated that the SARI team will conduct periodic monitoring visits to ensure the healthy growth of the crops and the overall success of the farm.
This milestone marks an important transition from training to implementation, reinforcing AFJN-Ghana’s commitment to promoting sustainable livelihoods and social empowerment within vulnerable communities.
