Preamble: Boukuru Community in the Sagnarigu district in Tamale was among the first three communities suggested to AFJN to make their official entry after the advocacy training workshop participants had in Tamale.
Boukurugu community became a very unique place when it was visited. The community as a whole was more open and receptive to the message of AFGN about youth, girls and women empowerment through education. Many of the girls expressed their determination to make a difference and provide a shining example worthy of emulation to the surrounding communities. The youth and women clubs were formed for that matter. They groups were meeting and giving reports of their meetings.
Boukurugu girls club won the sympathy of AFJN during a follow up visitation to the community. More than thirteen girls who completed senior secondary school and failed to pass all their subjects required for tertiary education, put down their names willing to go back schooling. They requested AFJN’s help to enable them attend remedial classes and register for the private examination called NOVDEC, to write and better their subjects. AFJN responded to help the willing girls to go back to school, and provide them with second hand bikes to ease their transportation cost . AFJN had interest in the girls’ determination to be an example to their peers in and around the community for choosing education as a way to better life. For that matter AFJN would make the girls ambassadors to advocate for girls and women empowerment through education. Because of limited funds, AFJN selected eight beneficiaries (six girls and two boys) for sponsorship and in return they act as the lead ambassadors. Selection was based on commitment to club meetings, willingness to contribute to the aspirations of the club( for instance to help tutor their young ones in the community in their homework etc.) and willingness to become active ambassador of AFJN
